The winter holidays are fun and joyous, but when you combine food, family, and friends in your home you are likely to end up with food spots and spills. Thankfully, COIT has cleaning tips and solutions for removing red wine stains from carpet.

Our Online Spot Removal Guide offers step-by-step instructions to help you create household cleaners that will get rid of most common spots, along with detailed advice on how to use them. Solutions for some of the most common spots are listed below:

How to Get Red Wine Out of Your Carpet

Red wine can cause anxiety-provoking spots on your carpet. The sooner you act to get rid of it, the better. To get wine out of the carpet fibers, try the following:

1. With a white cloth, try and blot as much of the red wine stain as you can. The more you can soak up, the less you’ll have to remove.

2. After you finish blotting, pour a bit of cold water directly onto the wine stain. Doing this helps dilute what remains of the stain, making blotting a bit easier. Continue blotting until you find that no more of the stain will come out.

3. Now prepare a baking soda paste by mixing a three to one ratio of water to baking soda and applying it to the affected area. Once the paste is dry, vacuum the stain.

Or you could try this method, which uses vinegar:

1. As with most stains, it’s best to blot the stain to remove any wine that hasn’t been absorbed yet. You can use paper towels or a clean cloth.

2. In a small bowl, pour two cups of warm water. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid.

3. Dip a sponge into the bowl and begin applying the solution directly onto the wine stain.

4. Continue blotting until the stain has lifted.
